Manila Carabaos & HMCS Ottawa Friendly Game '06/10/08
(Visited 394 times)The Manila Mighty Carabaos and HMCS Ottawa Canadian Navy had a friendly game at the Mall of Asia last June 7 at 10am. They wore the same color of jersey, so its a little bit confusing. 1st period was so intense. Ottawa scored 2 in the first 15 minutes of the game. But we had high hopes for the home team, specially when Andre Gan of Manila team scored its first goal. The crowd, spectators, and supporters shouted and cheered for the Manila team. It was fun watching the crowd because I think it was their first time to watch a real hockey game here in the Philippines. They were curious to see how Filipino hockey players (who live in a tropical country) play against Canadian players (where they live and breathe ice hockey), whether the crowd know the rules and how hockey is played, or just there to support and cheer for the Carabaos. The crowd inspired the Manila players to play their best. And it paid off! Last period of the game was the most exciting part and they tied at 3-3. Then followed by hockey shootout. Manila scored 2 while Canada scored 1. Twas a 5-4 victory for the Manila team.
Congratulations Manila Carabaos!!! Thanks to HMCS Ottawa team, hope you enjoy your stay in Manila.

The 2008 Mega Ice 5’s Ice Hockey Tournament '04/9/08
(Visited 437 times)The Manila Ice Vixens is going to the 2008 Mega Ice 5’s Tournament and will be held from May 4 to 12 in Hong Kong. The tournament will feature over 60 ice hockey teams around the world. The first international tournament of MIV was last May 2006 in KL, Malaysia. The WIHO won the 1st place, Malaysia Slayers placed 2nd and the Asian Stars (composed of 12 players from the Philippines, Hong Kong and Macau) placed 3rd overall. Tourney details H-E-R-E.
Then the 2nd tournament was The World Ice Hockey 5’s held in Hong Kong last June 2007. We didn’t win but it was a great experience for the 13 all-Filipino players. Details H-E-R-E.
Now, we’re preparing for another international tournament. We have 5 new players so we’re looking forward to a better competition. The tournament is fast approaching and we still have less than a month to practice. Can’t wait to meet the other teams from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan and Macau again. I know Manila Ice Vixens will do better this time because we’ve been practicing really hard.
“WE PLAY TO WIN. WE LIVE FOR GLORY.”
Vixens.. Vixens… Vixens… Awwwwwwoooooo!!
Manila Ice Vixens were featured on “Bandila” '04/4/08
(Visited 822 times)The Manila Ice Vixens were featured on Bandila’s “Astig” segment last night. “Bandila”, which is the Filipino word for flag, also alludes to the term “banner story,” or top news of the day. It airs at ABS-CBN, Monday to Thursday 11:00-11:30 p.m. & Friday 11:30 p.m.-12:00 midnight. The show featured women ice hockey players (my team, the MIV) and how we started playing ice hockey. As quoted by yours truly, “I’m proud to be a Filipina, representing ice hockey especially in other countries….”. Since we live in a tropical country and since ice hockey is a winter sport, we can actually play and can compete with other countries where the climate is cold. Also, it is growing fast here in the Philippines and more kids especially girls are beginning to appreciate this unique sport.

A Hockey Visitor from Alaska '02/25/08
(Visited 762 times)Filipino-American, Rudy Molina, visited the country for a vacation last month. He contacted me through my website last December and he was surprised to know that there is hockey here in the Philippines. He’s a Forward/Defense player from Alaska, playing for the U.S. Air Force Base Team here (the Elmendorf Eagles / Raptors). He wanted to try out ice hockey here so he brought in his gear. Anyways, he played some Fridays (with Bantam and Men’s team in Megamall), Saturdays (with Manila Ice Vixens in Megamall), and Mondays (with International / Expats / really good players in Mall of Asia). It was cool hanging out with him and exchanging ideas about hockey. Also, he made new friends with almost everyone at the rink hehe.. Oh btw, he donated cages and gloves too. Thanks for that, Rudy!
Anyhow, hope you’ll visit us again soon. Thanks for being a part of MIV! ![]()
A Hockey Visitor from Switzerland '02/3/08
(Visited 1022 times)A good friend, Jamil Mokhtar, from Switzerland visited the country last January for a three-week work plus leisure trip (on the side). We met him from our previous hockey tourney in Hong Kong last June 2007. He played for EHC Winterthur Team and Malaysian Team during the World Ice Hockey 5’s tournament. He is, by the way, half Malaysian and half Swiss. Jamil plays ice hockey for merely 19 years and he plays Forward/Offense. Also, he’s into snowboarding.
Anyhow, thanks for visiting! Next time you come back, bring your gear and lets play hockey! ![]()

Philippine Daily InquirerMANILA, Philippines — The way they were hustling and jostling on the ice rink, you’d never expect lithe, willowy ladies to emerge from under the thick and heavy ice hockey apparel.
“People are actually surprised that on ice we’re tough,” said wing defender Kae Lin Santiago of the Manila Ice Vixens. “Maybe because afterwards everyone’s putting on makeup and wearing skirts.”
For the Ice Vixens, the only women’s ice hockey club team in the country, overcoming skepticism has been part of the game.
“In other countries, most of the women hockey players are boyish; but here, they’re surprised that everyone’s girly,” said forward Jhoana Benedicto.
“People always think we’re figure skaters,” noted Sharm Miguel, who also plays forward.
It is a misconception other teams pay dearly for.

Hockey Visitors from Canada '11/29/07
(Visited 3203 times)I was contacted by Joven from Canada last September through this post. He brought along his wife Anita, who plays with the womens league in Vancouver Canada. They’re both goalies and they wanted to play hockey while in Manila. We met them in Megamall and played scrimmage one Friday hockey night. Unfortunately, Joven didn’t play because I can’t find extra goalie gear for him. Anyways, Anita was awesome! We had fun.
