I watched Miracle, Cutting Edge and Mighty Ducks 1 & 2 for four straight days this week. I don’t know why, but it gave me the urge to play again. I know, I abandoned the sport for 8 months now, that’s because I convinced myself that now is the time to retire and to find another sport. Yep! I told a few people that I’m retiring but you know, I’ve been saying that for a couple of years but I keep on coming back. I thought about it and I guess as long as I’m physically fit and can still carry my gears, I’m still going to play… no matter what they say about my age. ;) I can’t let go of that sport easily because that’s the only sport I have spent and invested in, from my gears to coach fee and to game fees. Like what other people say, ice hockey is one of the most expensive sport in the Philippines that’s why not all people can play hockey. :(

Before, I was into figure skating when my friend, Au, recruited me and asked me to join the first batch of women’s hockey team. I was convinced and inspired to join because my brother PJ and cousin Mike had played hockey too. The first time I attended the training, I don’t have my gears yet, so I had no choice but to use my figure skates and borrowed gears from my cousin. I really looked stupid but they were amazed to see me skate so fast (thanks to my toe pick). ;)

I remember six year back, ANC Channel interviewed me about Ice Hockey here in the Philippines. Imagine, I was chosen among other veteran players for that interview which made me really proud. I still have the recorded tape though coz it was my first time to be seen on tv. Oops, actually twas my 2nd time (the other tv guesting was kinda horrible ;) ) Anyways, SM Megamall Ice Hockey players were featured on tv shows like Magandang Umaga Bayan, ANC news & Unang Hirit. We were really in demand at that time. Those were the days…

Anyhow, I hope this blog reaches my former team “Vixens” for us to re-group and start playing pucks again. My shout out to Jhoanna, Tin, Michelle, Louann, Au, Rosel, Shaba, Alex, Patty, Chaya, Mutz, Megan, Meh & Christine). Also, my new team, “Wingers” (I must admit, I haven’t really practiced with the new team but will start to practice soon.) Hi to Kae, Babing, Allyson, Kriska, Anne, Michelle, Jessica, Dani, Kit & Jami. Hello also to the men’s hockey team “Black Wolves”. :)

hi sharm! sup?! wow yer into blog na rin ah! thats cool. well, im real fascinated with this sport, im into rollerblading and that gave me a twisted joint on my arm. havent tried ice hockey, i dunno the difference, but at least i tried street hockey which makes me sweaty. (ice hockey wont be cos youre playin on ice, hmm that sounds different) im proud, youve been chosen before to be interviewed for this sports. u know what the first time i saw u, it doesnt look na ice hockey player ka kasi you look so feminine :) pero you kick ass on ice! goodluck sa next sports and hope makasama ulet ako sa summer escapades nyo ni bossing ^__^

2. sharm - '02/8/06

Hi Fung! Thanks for checkin’ out my site. Yep! I’m the “chick that can kick *ss on ice” hehe… Actually, roller hockey is kinda similar with ice hockey. I think the only difference is ice hockey is more aggressive coz you tend to glide faster. Yep! Na-interview ako eh medyo bago palang ako sa team that time hehe.. Btw, mag-oopen na yung Olympic size ice skating rink sa Mall of Asia this month daw so, I’m really excited to skate again. Yeah.. pag uwi mo dito, out of town ulit tayo. Ü

3. reah - '02/10/06

4. sharm - '02/17/06

Hi,

I’m about to go to Manila for a few months, and may well move there for a few years starting in January. I’m trying to find contact details for people who are involved with mens’ recreational ice hockey (for old, unfit guys like me who have more experience than stamina…)

Would appreciate any leads or ideas. Thanks

Luc

6. sharm - '06/7/06

Hi Luc! Where in Manila are you going to stay? Actually, we have 3 ice skating rinks here and I can help you find a rink near your place. You might also want to check out the new Olympic size skating rink in Mall of Asia (largest mall in Asia and 3rd in the world) located in Pasay City. Hockey night is every Friday at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City and it’s open to all hockey players. The 3rd skating rink is located at the SM Southmall in Las Pinas. You can also call the Megamall rink for more info at (+632) 6335008. Hope the infos I’ve given helped in a way. Anyhow, thanks for checking out my site.Ü

8. sharm - '06/27/06

hi again dada! i’m really happy to know that you’re interested in hockey. here are some tips for you to get started. first, you should enroll at any sm megamall, southmall or mall of asia skating rinks. 2nd, buy your hockey skates coz rental skates are for figure skating type. 3rd, if you’re finished with your basic skating lessons, that’s the time you can buy your gears and enroll for hockey 3 to 6. anyhow, there’s a big difference between skating and playing hockey. skating or recreational skating can be learned in 1 day while hockey has 6 tyoes of lessons (basic - hockey 1 & 2, hockey 3,4,5 & 6) which can be learned in approx. 3 to 5 months. if you have more queries, you can ym me anytime. thanks and hope to see you at the rink soon. ;)

10. sharm - '10/5/06

Hi Hendrik! Here are the names of the hockey teams in the Philippines: Manila Predators (Squirts, Peewee, Bantam & Mens), Manila Blackwolves (Squirt, Peewee & Bantam), Christian Voyagers (Squirt & Peewee), Manila Comets (Mens), Manila Vixens (Womens), and a lot more. We just had a tournament/competition (SM Ice Hockey Showdown 2006) last Sept. 29 to Oct.1 which was held in Mall of Asia Manila, Philippines and we invited a team from Hongkong (Asiasports team). Also, we’re going to have an upcoming competition this December. We also join international competitions such as World Ice Hockey 5’s, Hong Kong Cup, Bangkok Ice Hockey Tournament and etc.

Yes, we do have a federation. The Women’s Ice Hockey Federation of the Philippines, National Ice Hockey League of the Philippines and more. If you have more queries, just let me know.

11. Kae - '10/20/06

yup Sharm, never quit hockey until we’re old and rusty
that’s just the way the world is, we’re one of the few who can “afford” the sport so we shouldn’t quit! haha

12. sharm - '10/21/06

i agree, kae! i just realized how important the sport is because it’s a unique sport and only a few people can play ice hockey. yeah, even if we’re really old… as long as we can skate and still check other players, we shouldn’t quit hahaha…. ;)

13. kopeshky - '10/24/06

Hi,

what are the results of the 2006 SM Ice Hockey Showdown?

It’s so hard to find ice hockey news there when I live all the way here in Toronto. :(

Anyways, here’s hope for future Filipino hockey athletes :)

14. sharm - '10/25/06

Hi there!

The 2006 SM Ice Hockey Showdown was held last Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 at the Mall of Asia. There were 10 local teams and 1 HK Team competed. You can check out the results here: http://www.smiceskating.com/news.asp.

The Women’s ice hockey team also had their exhibition game during the tourney. Anyhow, you can always get ice hockey news from this website and at www.smiceskating.com.

Thanks for checking out my site and hope to hear from you again. ;)

15. Matt Trinidad - '11/26/06

Hi There …

I’m from San Jose, CA. I have a friend here that mentioned to me that there is Ice hockey for men in the philippines. I play here, I’ve been playing for 15 years. I was wondering if you can give more information in regards how the leagues and the skill level are, cause I didn’t know we had ice hoceky players there, I think that is awsome.

thanks

16. sharm - '11/30/06

Hi Matt! Your friend is right. Not only ice hockey for men but also for women and kids. We have quarterly leagues based on categories (squirt, midget, bantam, women’s & men’s). We also participate on international competitions. I can compare the skill level of the men’s team from other Asian countries like HK, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, China, and etc. and i’m proud to say that the Philippines is doing good in this field. You can also check out www.smiceskating.com for updates.

If ever you’re going to visit Manila, I recommend you to see the Olympic size skating rink in Mall of Asia or the ice skating rink in Megamall and Southmall. My team would be glad to meet a hockey player from the US or other countries.

Thanks! =)

17. Matt Trinidad - '12/22/06

Sharm,

Hows the skill level/competition there ? (between the mens) I would like or try to play in a tournament there against the other asain countries you think you can hook me up ?

I was reading your webpage and saw that you guys have a tournament sometime next year and you need sponsors I’ll talk to my dad to see his company can do somethin.

18. sharm - '01/9/07

Hi Matt!

I think the skill level here is comparable to other Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and etc. but not as good as Canada, China, Japan and US though. But I’m glad to say that we’re not the least team either hehe… I can hook you up with some teams here in case you want to play. There’s an upcoming tourney (World Ice Hockey 5’s) in May or June and it’s the biggest event in Asia coz 50 countries will participate. Hopefully you can play for the country by then. ;)

Yes, unfortunately, the womens team need sponsors (badly) for the Ice Hockey 5’s tourney this year coz we’re the only team who doesn’t have sponsors yet (probably we have to prove our team first before we get sponsors hehe.. j/k). Anyhow, thanks in advance and hope to see you here soon!

Btw, you can message me thru my ym (id: sharmskee). :)

Subject: “HELP”: AWSM Corporate Sponsorship & Equipment Donation

To Sharmskee & the Manila Ice Vixens ice hockey organization –

Dear Ladies,
Very briefly –

Your “puckin’ passion” and sincerity is VERY winning indeed!

Our company, AWSM Endeavors, Ltd.* (”AWSM”), which specializes in international cultural exchange/entertainment/event-building, especially through the games of ice and ‘inline’ hockey, might be interested in becoming a “title” Ice Vixens Corporate Sponsor. AWSM would be willing to start with an initial sponsorship of $10,000 U.S. Dollars (USD = 490,614.62 PHP today!), PLUS a 30-set, FULL “Pro” kitting (”custom” team pants, gloves, helmets, sticks, bags, “Home” & “Away” game jerseys & socks, etc.) of the Manila Ice Vixens program based upon the Manila Ice Vixens commitment to travel-to and represent AWSM (and AWSM events) around the world. This would involve at least 2 - 3 international tournament/events per year (at least 1 European and maybe 1 Asian, North American or elsewhere). AWSM would help in fund-raising for traveling to these international events.

We would also be interested in organizing a women’s international “pursed” (MONEY!) tournament/event in the Philippines — one of the VERY FIRST of its kind in the international women’s game (as AWSM is already doing the FIRST-EVER elsewhere!). This tournament/event could be held in Manila (and probably in the Spring, late-April or early-May), wherever and whenever we both feel would be better for such an international event. If we are successful with both our association with the Manila Ice Vixens and in staging a women’s international tournament/event in the Phillipines, we would be willing to further ‘grow’ both our sponsorship, the event “purse” and the Manila Ice Vixens programs through additional financial commitment, maybe even on an ongoing “annual” basis.

Our telephone contact: I will forward on once we have your direct response via e-mail

With both the $10,000 USD cash sponsorship and the 30-set equipment donation this “AWESOME” sponsorship package totals well over $35,000 USD (1,717, 151.16 PHP to start!). This is a very serious and sincere inquiry and we would hope that our e-mail, interest and offer will be replied to one way or another.

Looking forward to your reply…

Regards,

Michael A. Kramer
President, AWSM Endeavors, Ltd.

My 7-year-old daughter has started to take hockey lessons at Mall of Asia. She can’t join the group lessons because she has no protective gear. Does anyone know where I can buy hockey equipment in the Philippines? We need everything!
